Cement Can Be Dangerous
Cement, of which portland cement is the most widely used, has been in use daily for many, many years all over the world, in many different applications including concrete, mortar for building, plaster, screeds, etc..
Some of the chemical ingredients of portland cement can have serious effects on the skin if someone has been exposed to wet concrete or other fresh mixtures containing cement, for prolonged periods of time.
When mixed with water, the hydration (the chemical
reaction that takes place) produces a strong
alkaline fluid that can cause alkali burns or tissue
damage when the alkalis react with the oils, fats
and the proteins in the skin. Safety measures need
to be implemented to protect workers from this.
When aggregates are handled or cementitious
material is cut or broken out, the dust generated becomes suspended in the air surrounding the area where the action is taking place. This dust should not be inhaled or allowed to come in contact with the eyes as this could also cause serious irritations and possible health problems later.
Precautionary measures that should be implemented while working with fresh concrete or other cementitious materials, include the wearing of protective clothing such as rubber gloves, rubber boots, dust masks and safety glasses.
